Multnomah Channel Moorages

The Multnomah Channel branches from the southern termination point of the Willamette River just prior to its convergence with the Columbia River and traverses along the western shoreline of Sauvie Island, one of the largest inland islands west of the Mississippi River.

Sauvie Island is a highly popular recreational destination known for biking, bird watching within large wildlife and preservation areas, multiple public beaches, and a broad selection of seasonal farmers markets offering fresh produce and locally raised foods. Two floating home moorages are located on the island itself, one being slip-owned and the other rental based. These communities generally offer some of the most rural and natural settings among the floating home areas, with homes facing the forested and undeveloped western banks of the Multnomah Channel.

Moorages located along the western side of the channel are predominantly rental moorages with a smaller number of slip-owned communities intermixed throughout the area. Floating home communities extending from Portland north toward Scappoose and St. Helens are generally accessed via U.S. Route 30 and span portions of both Multnomah and Columbia counties.

This area tends to appeal to those seeking a more rural atmosphere and natural setting. Depending on the location, residents may travel south with direct access into Northwest and downtown Portland and connecting freeway systems, or north toward the growing city of Scappoose and the smaller community of St. Helens. U.S. Route 30 also continues westward toward the Oregon Coast, making coastal weekend trips a popular lifestyle feature for many residents within this region.
